Mating 2025
The lead up to our 2025 mating season started back in January as we bounced the Hilux down the backroads into the mighty metropolis of Gore. Our destination, the annual Southern Shedding Sheep sale. Our goal, 2x elite Wiltshire rams. With over 80 2th rams for sale we were spoilt for choice but very quickly the whole scene became a blur of rams, figures and small talk. After jotting down a few quick notes about the ones that stood out, we took a seat in the auction ring and waited for the final litmus test of how well the rams stood out on their own. Buyers must have been predicting the good lamb prices this season as the bidding was hot, sending one boy over the $20,000 mark. We managed to pick up a sleek Wiltshire/Exlana cross from Willowglen Farms (225/23) as well as a stocky pure Wiltshire lad from Enfield Genetics (257/23). We dubbed these lads Soda and Scotch respectively.
Fast forward a couple of months and it was time to test the new fellas mettle. Soda (WG/225/23) coupled with the 51 stud rookies while Scotch (EG/257/23) went out with the stud 4ths, 50 in total. This left Shirley and Slingo to divvy up the M/A ladies. Once again we gave these relationships 2 cycles to blossom and then bunched the mob up and left Shirley in there to tidy up any that missed out.
Mating began on the 12th of March and finished on the 2nd of May which means in theory lambing should start on the 11th of August and go until about the 1st of October. Easy peasy!
