Weaning 2025

The sun is shining, the grass is growing and the stud lambs are now flying solo. It is a fantastic feeling to look out at all the new fledglings bouncing around in the clover and it marks the start of the busy season, much to the working dogs delight.

After drafting off the ewes, we ran the lambs around to the scales to see how they were tracking. We weighed a total of 253 lambs as well as 23 lambs that hadn’t been tagged, bringing our actual lambing percentage to 142%. Non taggers are a result of a multitude of scenarios, ranging from the tagged being ripped out, a defect in the lamb/dam, the dam birthing outside the designated time frame or I just missed them during the rounds. Our weaning weights had bounced back up to 28.3kg from the lows of last year’s rainy season which was expected but we still have a long way to go before we are challenging the bumper crop of 2021.

While the scales were set up we also decided to run the 36 2th rams through to see how they were doing. They came in at an average that was just shy of 90kg which, according to my lower back as I tried to shove them in the weighing crate, is heavy enough.
